Valencia’s Horchata — still dreaming about it
Visiting Valencia for our first time was not enough time to savor all it had to offer. Luckily, we had the advantage of local family members who were able to make most of our short stay.

One of the highlights of our trip was the Horchata (orxata) – a drink, made of tiger nuts, we had never had before but quickly came to love. Our “family tour guide,” explained to us that Horchateria Daniel was, in his opinion, the best place to get Horchata in Spain. Of course we were excited to have this specialty drink that we had never even heard of prior to our visit. We had never even tasted tiger nuts.

We were not disappointed by this pleasant, cold, refreshing drink with a milk-like appearance. We each ordered a large horchata and were also served a heaping platter full of Fartons – long slim sweet bread-like pastries covered in confectionary sugar, which we dunked into the horchata. Our tour guide was right, it was absolutely a delightful culinary experience that we have so far only been able to have in Valencia at Daniel.
Since returning home, we have tried unsuccessfully to find a restaurant or café to get the same Horchata and Fartons, which leads us to the conclusion that we’ll have to go back to Valencia just so we can get some more!
